2009 Heart of Sharing Resounding Success!

Co-chairs, Kim Laramy and Thomas Hillman reported that 85+ volunteers
met with 28 non profit organizations for the Heart of Sharing project last Thursday.
Definitely a very busy and productive day of giving back to our community.

Oil, Clay & Metal Join Forces!

Artists Mike Marks, Anna Russo and Elizabeth Marks, are excited to be opening a new art gallery at 613 Congress Street. Oil painting, ceramic wall hanging and metalsmith creations will all be offered in this new location.
Please join them in support for their Grand Opening on June 5th during the First Friday Art Walk.

Portland Harbor Museum Doubles in Size

The Portland Harbor Museum opens its doors to the public for the first time this year at 5PM, Wednesday, May 20.  This year’s new exhibits include stunning photography by famed photographers, Nance Trueworthy and Dean Abramson as well as five other new exhibits.  The museum is now located at 510 Congress St., next to the CVS Pharmacy.

Local Company Shows Where It’s Heart Is!

The Gilbane Building Company’s Portland office fielded a strong team of 18
walkers from their Portland office in support of the Southern Maine Heart
Walk, held May 17 at Payson Park. In addition to fielding the team of
walkers, the company donated $10,000 to the benefit!

Kevin Debasitis, Senior Business Development Manager with Gilbane said,
“Events like this remind us of why it’s so enjoyable to live and work in southern
Maine, and we’re proud to be a part of it.”

Prime Selected to Help Keep Kids Safe

Due to its high visibility and sales success, on Saturday, May 16th,  all the Prime Motor Group stores in Saco have been selected to host a Keep Your Kids Safe program. Prime will have a whole slew of events at all of their stores on the Prime Auto Mile, including police cruisers, ambulances, a K-9 corp. fire trucks and more.  First 300 families will get a FREE Guard-A-Kids Smart ID stick.

Local tax filers sitting on $3.1 million to pump into local economy!

More than 3,000 hard-working families and individuals had their taxes prepared and electronically filed for free this tax season, thanks to CA$H Greater Portland and AARP Tax-Aide. Those who took advantage of this free service saved $500,000 in income tax filing fees and got back more than $700,000 in Earned Income Tax Credits (EITC). In total, $3.1 million in state and federal refunds were returned thanks to the efforts of 116 volunteers. Now that is Good News!

Porthole Restaurant announces expansion to Harbor’s Edge meeting facility

Harbor’s Edge, at the site of the former Boone’s Restaurant at 6 Custom House Wharf, is now open and booking functions at its newly renovated meeting facility.  The Harbour’s Edge meeting room shares a spacious deck on Custom House Wharf with the Comedy Connection and the Porthole Restaurant. Designing Women, a New England group of women artists, had their first show and sale of the 2009 season in Portland on May 2. Sales and attendance were so successful they will be doing the same thing again next year!

Portland chef gets the Beard

Rob Evans, the chef and owner of Hugo’s restaurant at 88 Middle Street, received the award as the Northeast region’s best chef at the James Beard Foundation Award ceremony in New York City. Evans beat out three chefs from Greater Boston, reinforcing Portland’s standing as a phenomenal food town.
