U of M Cooperative Extension Offers New Perspective on Baby Food!

When most people think of green baby food, pureed peas or string beans come to mind. But Kate Yerxa, the statewide educator for nutrition and physical activity at the University of Maine Cooperative Extension, has a different perspective. The green she sees isn’t beans. It’s dollar bills. “Over six months, you can save $60 if you just make your own green beans, but the greatest cost saving came from meat and baby food.”

To help Maine parents save money and offer safe, healthy alternatives to store-bought baby food, Yerxa will lead a series of “Make Your Own Baby Food” classes starting Sept. 8 in Bangor.

Yerxa’s classes and UMaine Extension’s “Making Your Own Baby Food” publication provide nutritious recipes, discuss storage techniques and review when it’s appropriate to introduce new foods to babies and infants, including pureed versions of the same meals their parents are eating.

For information or to register for the classes, which will take place from Sept. 8 to Nov. 18 at 103 Texas Ave. in Bangor, call Nannette Marcinkowski at 581-3445. Tidewater Farm Learning Center Closer to Fundraising Goal

The University of Maine’s Cooperative Extension reports that its effort to develop a Regional Learning Center at Tidewater Farm in Falmouth has raised $675,000 of its $1.9 million capital campaign goal. The Learning Center will be an educational hub for teaching Maine Youth and adults in York and Cumberland counties about sustainable living by promoting local agriculture; ecological home horticulture; land and water conservation and innovative home-based businesses in the region. Portland Harbor Museum Doubles in Size

The Portland Harbor Museum opens its doors to the public for the first time this year at 5PM, Wednesday, May 20. This year’s new exhibits include stunning photography by famed photographers, Nance Trueworthy and Dean Abramson as well as five other new exhibits. The museum is now located at 510 Congress St., next to the CVS Pharmacy.

3rd Annual Sports Dance raises $14k for Falmouth High School Sports!

This year’s dance was hosted by the girls volleyball and hockey teams with the boys football team coming on board for the first time. A record 500 tickets were sold, packing the newly renovated Italian Heritage. In total the event raised $14,000 as the live auction brought in another $7000 to the ticket sales with Kim Block and Charles Crosby wooing the bids..

Portland Harbor Museum to open in May

Portland Harbor Museum has announced that it has moved from its former location at SMCC in South Portland to the former WT. Grant Building on Congress St., in downtown Portland and has scheduled a grand opening for May 21. The grand opening will include, among its many fascinating exhibits, photo displays of the working waterfront by renowned photographers Nance Trueworthy and Dean Abramson.
